nice depth of lighting
Posted : 15 years, 8 months ago on 29 March 2009 04:39 (A review of Werewolf of London)The set design and the depth achieved in the lighting are both exceptional -- too bad cinematographer Charles J. Stumar died in 1935. The film features many distinct and interesting characters throughout. Well-acted and atmospheric overall.

Better movie
Posted : 16 years, 12 months ago on 29 November 2007 04:17 (A review of Payback: Straight Up)Movie works better with darker tone, but still retains the humour without seeming goofy. Only thing is at 86 minutes, the ending feels abrupt -- perhaps not quite as "70's" as the filmmakers hoped.

"Uma, Oprah"

All Ford bluster without the Ford poetry
Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 15 May 2007 08:19 (A review of Gideon of Scotland Yard)The trouble with director John Ford's account of a typical day-in-the-life of a Scotland Yard detective is that it's non-stop blustery talk-talk-talk with none of the poetry of his other work. The wall-to-wall dialog in this movie is delivered as if they were afraid of leaving a silent moment, which is too bad since many of Ford's non-dialog moments in his other movies are filled with cinematic poetry. And then there are those fake backgrounds out the windows with the miniature double-decker buses all jiggling forward at the same speed. Very disappointing.
